Dos personas más murieron dentro del edificio que fue incendiado durante un tiroteo en un centro de reuniones de La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días en Grand Blanc, Michigan, la mañana del domingo.
La información fue proporcionada por el jefe de la Policía de Grand Blanc Township, William Renye, durante una conferencia de prensa a las 18:00 h, hora local.
El ataque fue “un acto de violencia selectiva”, según Reuben Coleman, agente especial interino a cargo de la oficina de campo del FBI en Detroit.
Renye agregó que el edificio no ha sido totalmente despejado y que aún no se ha podido dar cuenta de todas las personas.
Otras dos personas murieron a causa de las heridas del tiroteo, según se informó más temprano en el día. Además de las cuatro víctimas fallecidas, el atacante también murió.
Siete víctimas del tiroteo se encuentran en condición estable y una está en condición crítica, dijo Renye en una breve conferencia de prensa a las 15:00 h, hora local, en la que no respondió preguntas.
La policía afirma que el sospechoso, identificado como Thomas Jacob Sanford, de 40 años, de Burton, Michigan, estrelló su vehículo contra las puertas principales del centro de reuniones donde cientos de personas estaban congregadas para los servicios. Según la policía, el sospechoso salió del vehículo y comenzó a disparar. Se cree que el incendio que envolvió el edificio fue provocado deliberadamente por el sospechoso.
El sospechoso murió en el estacionamiento tras intercambiar disparos con los agentes que respondieron rápidamente a la escena, dijo Renye.
“Se recibió la llamada a las 10:25 de la mañana con 32 segundos”, dijo Renye. “Teníamos agentes en el lugar a las 10:25 con 57 segundos”.
Más temprano, la policía dijo que creía que “encontraremos más víctimas una vez que la escena esté asegurada”.
“Hubo un incendio de grandes proporciones y creemos que había personas cerca de ese incendio que no pudieron salir de la iglesia”, afirmó Renye.
